7-At the beginning

  • This circular stained glass window never ceases to surprise with its place, its positioning, its shapes its size and meaning.

  • In the inventory of works by pierre Chevalley (1926 – 2006), it bears the name « au beginning ».

  • Rather than talking about oculus, a window with a round profile, we must talk about the shape of a tondo ; a form of painting that came back into fashion in the 15th and 16th centuries, notably at Bosch but also at Raphael, Caravaggio and also at Ingres.

  • À round window assumes a « heavenly » look. The circle, the sphere and the disk refer to the idea of perfection, even squaring the circle.
