7-Oculus ou tondo

– This circular stained-glass window never ceases to amaze with its placement, positioning, shape, size and meaning.

– An oculus is a round, sometimes oval or polygonal, opening in a wall or vault. This term, of Latin origin, translates as « eye » in French.

– Rather than talking about an oculus, a window with a round profile, we should talk about the tondo form : a form of painting that came back into fashion in the 15the and 16th centuries, with Raphael, Caravaggio, and also Ingres.

– A tondo refers to a painting painted on a round wooden panel, common during the Italian Renaissance
